The coverings we see on the jewel bugs are not hardened wings, but an extended part of the thorax - that is, the chest part of the bug. When we look at these flat jewel bugs, which are called "true bugs" it would seem they have the same covering. Now one big difference between bugs and beetles are that with beetles, they have the hardened wings that cover the top of the beetle's body, with the soft wings they use to fly underneath. We got our information from this great web site that explained the differences between bugs and beetles in short, easy-to-understand phrases: We did a chart to list those differences, with examples of different kinds of bugs and beetles. Ok, so having read some of the facts there, we realised there must be a clear difference between a bug and a beetle, right? So we did some more research, and found out that bugs and beetles are both insects, but are from different orders of species and that there are distinct differences between the two. Jewel bugs moult, which is when they shed their exoskeleton to grow bigger.

Sometimes, like with this subject, it really goes into many different directions! This, too, is learning, and when you do this daily, that makes up a great deal of new things we will have learned over the course of the year, about these interesting subjects!īut the bonus is that sometimes we come across something that just captures our interest, and it spurs us on to learn more. Some days we spend a minute on it, just looking at the pictures and reading the short clips underneath the images. It provides us with two great learning opportunities, and something useful to add to our learning routine. Last week I mentioned a cool web site that Tricia from Te Kura directed us to - which shows an Astronomy Picture of the Day.Īfter that, we discovered another site that offers the same feature, but this one shows a Wildlife Photo of the Day.
